Myanmar, Rebuilding Connections post Earthquake

Challenge
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Sagaing, Myanmar, shaking both Myanmar and Thailand. The disaster toppled buildings—including a high-rise in Bangkok—causing widespread chaos and devastation. With Myanmar already grappling with poverty, civil conflict, and an existing internally displaced population, this quake has deepened an already dire humanitarian crisis. Emergency declarations now span 16 regions in Myanmar, with aftershocks continuing to threaten lives and cut off communities from aid and support.
Solution
SmartAID, which has been supporting displaced communities along the Myanmar–Thailand border over the past year, has launched an immediate emergency response. A Search & Rescue Team is being deployed to work with local first responders. SmartAID is also establishing a technology hub to coordinate relief, deploying solar-powered systems to provide light and connectivity, installing Wi-Fi to support communication between affected communities and first responders, and distributing clean water units to help prevent disease outbreaks.
Impact
By leveraging its long-standing presence and partnerships in the region, SmartAID is transforming desperation into resilience. These technology-driven solutions are not only saving lives but also empowering communities to recover and rebuild. “We can’t turn away now—not when they need us most,” says Shachar Zahavi, Founding Director of SmartAID. As the crisis unfolds, SmartAID calls on global supporters to help fuel this critical response.
