Your donations have delivered life-saving aid to North Carolina and Florida
Since September 26, Hurricane Helene has uprooted thousands of families across Southeastern USA. The surge in rainfall led to record-breaking water levels, which turned into raging floods, collapsed homes and entire towns being cut off from clean water and electricity.
With over 230 lives lost and hundreds still missing, communities had just begun the painful process of recovery when news of another approaching hurricane brought renewed fear and uncertainty.
As entire communities are shut off from basic necessities like electricity, shelter, food and water, we partnered with FP Project and local grassroots organizations to bring vital technology and aid to North Carolina and Florida’s hardest-hit areas.
Thanks to your donations to the Hurricane Helene Relief Fund, we sent “Smart Mobile Trailers” equipped with solar power, charging ports and WIFI across the affected region. They have brought essential support to first responders and local volunteers from Asheville to Taylor County.
Why is technology important in disaster areas?
When disasters like Hurricane Helene strike, electricity and WIFI enable us to reach people quickly and efficiently. It can be a lifeline to organize efforts, reunite families and reach people who can’t move because of injury, disability or infrastructure collapse.
At SmartAID, we work side-by-side with local communities in humanitarian crises to integrate technology into their relief efforts. In response to the specific needs of the crisis and the aid efforts’ expertise, we fly in essential tech and source local solutions to help communities heal from disasters and build resilience long-term.
"When we meet people arriving into aid stations after a natural disaster, the first thing they ask for is a phone charger" says Shachar Zahavi, Founding Director of SmartAID, "With their phone, they can contact family and friends, making sure they’re safe and don’t need immediate support. They can rally cleaning and rebuilding supplies with their larger community via social media, and really start the regeneration process”.
Your support powers real impact:
- Electricity for shelters and food kitchens
- Charging stations to help families reconnect
- Power for local clinics, ensuring the safe storage of medicines
- Support for emergency responders to stay connected and save lives
Together, building resilience
Beyond immediate aid, we’re raising funds to send additional “Smart Trailers” and provide energy, connectivity, and clean water where it has not been restored.
Your donations have the most power to help the communities in Florida and North Carolina right now. Donations directly support electricity, water, and medical aid for communities in crisis, supporting them to rebuild their neighborhoods and reignite their economic and educational systems. Please donate to our Hurricane Helene Relief Fund, or contact szahavi@smartaid.org for more information.
We’re always looking for new ways to deliver aid faster, better and further. To do so, we work in partnership with the tech and employees from companies like DHL or Starlink. Through our shared collaboration, we’re improving the delivery and quality of aid reaching thousands of people. If you have transferable skills or your company has technology and infrastructure we could use, partner with us.
